Libel and Slander:

Libel/Slander: These acts, often coupled together, involve the purposeful defamation of another's character.

Libel is defamation expressed in written form, including pictures, signs and print. Slander is the speaking of defamatory words designed to harm another's reputation.

Both libel and slander, usually but not always, involve false and malicious words concerning another, whereby injury results to his or her reputation. Often libel and/or slander affects the targeted person in such a way as to damage them monetarily.

An example of such monetary damage would be if a person slandered or libeled loses a contract for work due to the harm done to their reputation. The amount of damages in such a case would either be settled on or determined by a court of law.
